This study aims to empirically examine the effect of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Score, both as a combined score and as its three constituent dimensions (Environmental, Social, and Governance), on corporate financial performance as proxied by Return on Assets (ROA). The study is motivated by an empirical phenomenon in which the average ESG score of the sample firms increased from 51.28 in 2021 to 54.93 in 2024, while average ROA moved in the opposite direction, declining from 8.37% to 6.89% over the same period. Using a quantitative approach, this study employs panel data from 50 non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during 2021–2024, selected through purposive sampling, yielding 200 firm-year observations. ESG score data were obtained from the Refinitiv Eikon database, while financial data were obtained from firms' annual reports. Data were analyzed using panel data regression with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM) and cluster-robust standard errors in STATA 17. The results show that the combined ESG Score has a negative and significant effect on ROA (coefficient = −0.19; p = 0.021), rejecting the hypothesized positive relationship. In contrast, at the dimensional level, none of the Environmental, Social, or Governance scores individually exert a statistically significant effect on ROA. The control variable Leverage consistently shows a negative and significant effect on ROA in both models. These findings suggest that ESG implementation in Indonesia is still in an early investment phase that burdens short-term profitability, implying that its financial benefits may only materialize over a longer horizon.
